What is it about?

An anonymous Middle English poem presents brief histories of the kings of England from William the Conqueror to Henry VI. This essay lists its manuscript copies and describes the different physical forms they take.

Why is it important?

Some of the manuscripts are newly identified. More copies than previously assumed are in roll rather than book form. These facts affect our understanding of how widely the chronicle circulated and the ways in which readers encountered it.

Perspectives

Writing about the St Andrews version of the Middle English verse chronicle was a great pleasure because this manuscript has featured in my classes for many years.
