What is it about?

Fuel injectors are integral parts of modern internal combustion engines, as their operation affects efficiency and emissions. The adverse operating conditions of these device may result to increased susceptibility to cavitation and erosion. The present work investigates the multiphase flow in an enlarged orifice, diesel injector-replica. The importance of the work lies on the derivation of the averaged density distribution and erosion through the orifice, obtained through X-ray micro-CT scans, and the comparison with numerical predictions.

Why is it important?

The present work provides for the first time qualitative data of density distribution and erosion locations for a practical geometry, along with a validated cavitation model.

Perspectives

The present work can serve as a validation case for the development/testing of numerical models and software.
