What is it about?

New York is a state that has experienced a number of natural and man-made disasters in the 21st century. There have been no studies comparing disaster preparedness between urban and rural hospitals in the state. We conducted a survey study of 207 community hospitals in New York. The results showed that differences exist with regard to five of six elements of disaster preparedness.

Why is it important?

This is the first study of its kind in New York. The results of this study provide an assessment of the current state of disaster preparedness in urban and rural community hospitals in New York. Differences in preparedness between the two settings may reflect differing priorities with respect to perceived threats, as well as opportunities for improvement that may require additional advocacy and legislation.

Perspectives

Hospitals play an important role in taking care of victims of disasters. Therefore, disaster preparedness should be an important consideration for hospital administrators and providers alike. I believe that our study provides not only important information and feedback for New York hospitals, but also serves as a basis for comparison for hospitals in other states.
