What is it about?
Based on the data mining, the study demonstrates that surfaces of electroactive molecular films are describable by their intrinsic work functions. The intrinsic functions for about 20 popular small molecules were estimated. Besides, a correlation between ionization energies and work functions for molecular films was detected here likewise to that for elemental surfaces. The study also addresses the effect of orientation of molecules constituting the film on the film work function; this necessitates an extension of growth models for molecular films.

Why is it important?
The study shows that surfaces of electroactive molecular films are classifiable—analogously to elemental surfaces—by their intrinsic and thereby absolute work functions.
