What is it about?
Although vacations increase chances on creative insights by raising the amount of cognitive elements (flexibility), they do not necessarily lead to higher levels of originality. Research in larger samples is required to further explore mechanisms that may explain why travel enhances creativity.

Why is it important?
Recreational travel may spark creativity in working people. We integrate theories derived from tourism, applied psychology and leisure science. We propose three mechanisms that may link recreational travel and creativity. We measured creativity in a working sample before and after long summer vacations. Cognitive flexibility increased while originality remained unaltered after vacation.
