Why is it important?

This article was published as the concept was just emerging, but remains highly cited today as a foundational article on the topic, including the generally accepted definition of the term: "All informal communications directed at consumers through Internet-based technology related to the usage or characteristics of particular goods and services, or their sellers. This includes communication between producers and consumers as well as those between consumers themselves—both integral parts of the WOM flow."

Perspectives

Though dated, this article remains the most constantly cited article on the topic as the definition and descriptions provided are as important today as when they were penned in 2008.
