Why is it important?
Although microbial reduction of selenium oxyanions is known, the operating mechanisms are not fully understood. The microbial reduction process is technologically important for removing soluble selenium and retaining mostly in elemental Se in the biomass. There is a little focus on Se recovery. Removal and recovery options are highlighted.
Perspectives
This publication has identified the future needs of R&D in microbial selenium reduction and recovery options.
