What is it about?
Data localization refers to policies requiring that data about certain users reside within certain national boundaries. Such policies exist on account of national and other laws and concerns about privacy and national security.

Why is it important?
While different national and other regulatory authorities have created policies on data localization, the effects of the same are not well understood. In particular, the countervailing concern about data localization is any adverse effects that may occur on digital trade and commerce. In this work, we carry out an analysis using agent-based modeling, to help inform policy-makers and others about the likely effects of different types of data localization policies.
