What is it about?

The paper proposes analysis of L0-optimal control, also known as maximum hands-off control, using non-smooth maximum principle, which is a set of necessary conditions of optimality.

Why is it important?

The paper gives necessary conditions for L0 optimality of maximum hands-off control, which are useful to solve the sparse control problem (i.e. L0 optimal control) without any relaxation (e.g. L1 optimal control). It is known that if the relaxed L1 optimal control is singular, then the solution may not equivalent to L0 optimal control. In this case, you can solve the L0 optimal control problem by solving the two-boundary differential equations from the necessary conditions.

Perspectives

This is a mathematical paper but very useful if you want to solve the maximum hands-off control as an L0 optimal control, without any convex relaxation.
