What is it about?
One of the most important factors that affect the chemical and physical characteristics of the culture medium in vitro, is the type and concentration of the gelling agent. Here, we investigate the influence of conventional agar (agar and bacto agar) as well as modern gelling agents like gelrite and phytagel on different regeneration stages of two important Egyptian rice cultivars.

Why is it important?
our results suggest that the effect of a given gelling agent may be dependent on the specific plant species or genotype (cultivar). In this regard, while the type and concentration of gelling agents affect significantly the callus induction step in rice regeneration, it has no impact on the shoot regeneration stage.
