What is it about?

Over the last decade, several methodologies have been developed in the literature to assess the walkability of built environments. Although these methods have been used widely in developed countries, few studies have used them in developing countries such as Iran. The overall aim of this research study is to propose an integrated methodology as a decision-making tool; using spatial analyses based on GIS and remote sensing data to measure the walkability of street segments based on simple, available and useful indices related to urban planning.

Why is it important?

• Providing urban planners with a suitable walkability measure and analysis tool at the street level • This study will direct its attention to path-related built environment factors, those which influence people’s propensity to walk and the length of their walks. • A group decision-making approach (based on expert and non-expert preferences) was developed to rank street segments based on their walking potential. • There are five indices in 2D-GIS and two indices in 3D-GIS environment as evaluation criteria.
