What is it about?
Auditory processing disorder (APD) may be a very early sign of Schizophrenia. APD may affect speech in noise/babble perception. Auditory processing elements that may be deficient include dichotic listening, temporal resolution (how fast a person can perceive running speech), frequency and duration pattern identification. This may lead to impaired cognitive skills.

Why is it important?
Auditory perception and cognition are thought to be linked. It is not often considered that poor hearing can lead to impaired cognition but there is evidence from different fields that confirms this possibility. Taking this into account rehabilitation of patients may vastly improve through early diagnosis and using central auditory nervous system neuroplastisity.
