What is it about?
The rhizosphere ('root zone') is the volume of soil around roots that is influenced by root activity. Terrestrial plants via their roots provide the link between subsurface processes, plant productivity and the atmosphere. This paper reviews recent technological progress in understanding the movement of water around the rhizosphere.

Why is it important?
Understanding water movement around roots is important for a myriad of fundamental and practical applications, from improving water use efficiency in agriculture to understanding water partitioning and routing in forest soils. All of which are largely scale dependent. This review paper focuses on the use and limitations of image-based modeling and upscaling as a bridge that links various length scales.
