What is it about?

Wood resource exploitation by hunter-gatherers during the Greenland Stadial 2 in two geographical areas of N Spain: Asturias and Cantabria. This study correlates climatic events, vegetation dynamics and human adaptations to changing environments and the subsequent wood supply strategies developed in both regions.

Why is it important?

The integrated approach of charcoal data has allowed a comparative study of the daily firewood supply strategies developed by humans in these two areas, both within a bipolar subsistence economy and throughout the GS2, a period characterized by strong climate instability. Despite both areas are similar in terms of current climate and geography, the results obtained differ regarding quantitative representation of major taxa observed in their respective charcoal assemblages.

Perspectives

Although this new study has offered new data, the charcoal information for this period of time is still little known in the geographical space considered. The perspectives would be to be able to expand these studies along the Cantabrian mountain range.
