What is it about?

During preoperative period, psychiatric disorders are common conditions and must be systematically assessed. We showed in 393 patients with obesity class III that mood, anxiety and eating disorders are comorbid and enduring characteristic. This finding has implication for treatment of psychiatric conditions and follow-up in post-surgical periods.

Why is it important?

Several reports of suicide, abnormal eating disorder, bipolar episode after the surgical are found in the bariatric clinics. Moreover, anxiety disorders are the most enduring condition and are undertreated during the weight loss. These patterns of psychopathological presentation may interfere in the follow-up.

Perspectives

Investigation of psychopathological comorbidity is important in pre-operative period of patients with obesity. The psychiatric disorders can manifest as full-bloom disorders and new forms of presentation due to their persistence across lifespan.
