What is it about?

Understanding the impacts of different hardware platforms and optimizations onto tail-latency when processing packets through containers. This allows to understand the reasons and impacts between virtualization overhead, optimizations, and low tail-latency. We identified that next to interrupt reduction, selecting the hardware platform for the individual virtualization is important.

Why is it important?

Understanding the basic worst-case impact of virtualization and the system onto basic networking tasks is required in order to utilize it in network applications requiring low-latency.

Perspectives

Influences on high-throughput packet processing applications on the latency is important to analyze and detect the possibilities to use sharing and on-demand provisioning of network resources. We can use our work to understand the baseline of using networking applications in virtualized environments.
