What is it about?

This study explores how collaborative efforts between patients and healthcare providers can improve outcomes for individuals with Type 2 diabetes (T2D). Using self-determination theory, the research examines the impact of perceived shared decision-making (SDM) and autonomy support on treatment satisfaction and self-management adherence among T2D patients. Data from 378 participants were analyzed, revealing that autonomy support from providers enhances both treatment satisfaction and self-management adherence. Shared decision-making, while improving treatment satisfaction, was found to negatively impact self-management adherence. However, patients' coping abilities can mitigate these negative effects, emphasizing the need for healthcare providers to tailor their approaches based on individual coping capacities. The study suggests that healthcare providers should engage in shared decision-making and provide autonomy support while assessing and bolstering patients' coping abilities to improve diabetes management and overall treatment satisfaction.

Why is it important?

The study highlights the importance of patient-provider collaboration through shared decision-making (SDM) and autonomy support. By involving patients in their care decisions and supporting their autonomy, providers can enhance patient engagement and adherence to treatment plans.

Perspectives

The study shows that patients who participate in SDM feel more involved and empowered in their healthcare decisions. This can lead to a greater sense of control and confidence in managing their condition. The research emphasizes assessing patients' coping abilities. Providers can use this information to tailor their care approaches, offering more personalized and effective support that aligns with individual patient needs and capacities.
