What is it about?
Edaravone is an anti-oxidant in acute iscemic brain disorders. We investigated the effects of edaravone on the production of nitric oxide and reactive oxiegen speecies and proinflammatory cytokines, produced by activated microglia. We also examined the neuroprotective role of edaravone in cortical neuronal cultures oxidatively stressed by the peroxynitrite or activated microglia.

Why is it important?
Our findings show edaravone suppressed the production of NO and ROS by activated microglia, though it did not suppress production of inflammatory cytokines. Moreover, edaravone suppressed neuronal cell death and dendrotoxicity induced by either the peroxynitrite or activated microglia. Therefore, Edaravone may act as a neuroprotective agent counteracting oxidative neurotoxicity arising from activated microglia.
