What is it about?
This is an example on how team work is useful. This problem started with Dr Silva's PhD thesis, he couldn't apply the usual techniques to determine residual stresses in some of the thin films he produced because the composition varied along the thickness of the film. Mr Miscione, finishing his MsC dissertation, had experience in finite element modeling and used his knowledge to produce an algorithm to determine these residual stresses. Finally, we needed the Young moduli of the film depending on the composition and this was the contribution of Dr Marcondes, with ab initio calculations.

Why is it important?
Residual stresses are important to improve the wear resistance and other properties of thin films, but in some cases the film is not homogeneous and the usual techniques used to do this are insufficient.
