What is it about?
A novel pyrrolizidine alkaloid was isolated and purified from the aerial parts of Crotalaria retusa L. Structural elucidation of the alkaloid was established by analyses of high field NMR spectra and quantum mechanical calculations.

Why is it important?
Pyrrolizidine alkaloids (PAs) belong to a group of secondary metabolites, found in many plants. These PAs are present in more than 6000 plants. This leguminous is found in tropical and subtropical regions and it has been used as the basis of folk medicine. The potential use of these compounds in the treatment of diseases such as diabetes and cancer, or their application as nematicide, are driving forces to look for new natural PAs or new less cytotoxic synthetic derivative. Theoretical computation associated with spectroscopic data was used to establish the relative stereochemistry of this natural product.
