What is it about?

This article reviews current studies documenting that microplastics can serve as vectors for the spread of contaminants in marine waters.

Why is it important?

The impacts of microplastics - in particular their diffusion into the environment with particular respect to aquatic ecosystems, the interaction they can have with the biota after their release into the environment and the consequent effects - constitute a new frontier of knowledge.

Perspectives

The study of microplastics interaction with chemicals in natural ecosystems is a challenge for the scientific community, for the risks that plastic pollution can pose to for both human and environmental health.
