What is it about?

This publication provides an up-to-date review of the most important and effective methods that economists use to value the role of mangroves in protecting coastal populations, livelihoods and property from cyclones, storm surge and other coastal hazards.

Why is it important?

Mangroves are rapidly disappearing from many coastlines of the world, and as a result, many populations are becoming increasingly vulnerable to storm and flooding damages as the frequency and intensity of tropical storms increase

Perspectives

For many years I have been working on improving economic methods of valuing the storm protection provided by coastal ecosystems, using mainly mangroves as an example. This article summarizes and explains in a fairly accessible manner the recent advances that have been made in this important field. I cite many examples and actual case studies from the literature as illustration.
