Why is it important?
Wind energy is one of the most controversial renewable energy types, possibly due to the multiple related public concerns. Although some European country-comparisons exist, research concerning acceptance factors in different political and cultural planning contexts is scarce, especially in Eastern and Southern Europe. We provide a general overview of acceptance problems in Europe and their relationship to participatory processes and practices. An overall conclusion is that planners and decision-makers need to be more aware about the diversity of acceptance issues, which would allow them to design more appropriate strategic and local planning processes.
Perspectives
I hope our paper adds to social aspects of renewable energy studies, by highlighting that participation in strategic planning also matters to acceptance (in addition to participation in local planning).
