In this article we trace the history of how and why global leadership has become a field of study. What makes global leadership different from "regular" leadership? How have scholars approached studying it? What implications does the research about it have for actual global leaders working in profit and not-for-profit organizations?

Why is it important?
Global leadership is a relatively new area in the field of leadership studies. It focuses on leaders who must simultaneously lead multiple followers and stakeholders across multiple boundaries of all types – national, cultural, economic, etc. Globalization has forced leaders to expand their leadership skills to be able to lead in a constant state of global complexity. In this article we trace the history of how global leadership came into being as a field of study and where it is going in the future and how that impacts both scholars and leaders.
