What is it about?
CD34+ hematopoietic stem/progenitor cells (HSPCs) express limited levels of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) receptor (CD4) and resistant to HIV infection. In this study, we found an optimal in vitro condition in which HSPC can be infected by HIV.

Why is it important?
Loss of bone marrow CD34+ cells and hematopoiesis potential in HIV+ patients may be critical in development of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS), but the underlying mechanisms are still poorly understood. In addition, it has been difficult to analyze those cells in vitro in the presence of HIV.
