What is it about?

We examine four recent biopower plants and global benchmarks. Electricity from biomass is more expensive than energy efficiency, natural gas, wind, or solar but substantially less expensive than new coal or nuclear plants. Compared to coal and natural gas, air pollutant emissions of biopower are also intermediate: higher than solar or wind, lower than coal.

Why is it important?

The use of biomass to produce electricity is controversial. This paper provides detained environmental and cost analysis.

Perspectives

There has been considerable discussion about whether biomass is cost effective in electricity production. In this paper we provide a rather detailed example of the costs and operational and environmental implications of bioelectricity.
