What is it about?
The expressibility of the meibomian glands in eyelids are associated with dry eye symptoms. Independently, the amount of papillae in the lower conjunctival fornix is associated with dry eye symptoms.

Why is it important?
Dry eye is related to inflammation against extrinsic factors: there may be environmental antigens and altered lipid antigens (in eyelid disease) pushing the disease suffering. Interestingly, the traditional diagnostic signs of dry eye aren't associated with the severity of symptoms once adjusted for the two factors.
