Why is it important?
Increasingly there is awareness of the innate defence in diseases in the ocular surface. There is no doubt that studies will better define the role of molecules such as S100A8 and S100A9 proteins in the future. This will include the possibility of how they activate the adaptive immune system in various diseases.
Perspectives
S100 proteins are alarmins, they can be used as biomarkers for inflammation.
