Why is it important?

Exercise practitioners see many clients with overweight or obesity, either as the chief complaint or a comorbidity. Yet, there are lot of misconceptions and misinformation about obesity management, including the role of physical activity. This position statement from ESSA provides clear, evidence-informed guidance around the volume and type of exercise that has been shown to be most effective in preventing weight and waist circumference gain, enabling reductions in adiposity and weight as well as preventing weight and adiposity regain after a successful weight managment program.

Perspectives

A distinctive feature of these recommendations is the recognition that improving health in people with overweight or obesity can be achieved by addressing the different elements of overweight and obesity that go beyond a focus on total weight loss.
