Why is it important?
Considering the role of the GI scheme as a catalyst, this research demonstrated that the relationships between changing agricultural landscapes and TEK are closely related to the local farmers' registration as a GI product. The GI registration process of Japan functioned as a catalyst for the knowledge-sharing process.
Perspectives
Without managing ecosystems or the biophysical aspects of an agri-environment with relevant knowledge, the small GI farmers could not increase their production. The case study demonstrates that agricultural landscape management with GI products can facilitate local stakeholder collaboration such as the sharing of TEK via GI registration and utilization processes. We identified that the GI process catalyzed to open the knowledge sharing from enclosed family members to the community members.
