What is it about?
Absolute quantification of tear proteins is beneficial for eye research, since the tear proteins reflect the health of the eye and various proteins are deranged in different diseases. The diseases may range from common ones such as dry eye, chemical injury and allergies, to devastating infections and scarring conditions. Despite the usefulness of this approach, absolute quantification of proteins is still challenging, so we evaluate one possible strategy for 47 proteins commonly encountered.

Why is it important?
It is now possible to compare absolute protein levels across different people or between different samples of tears collected at different time points. This will allow monitoring of patients on a very objective basis, as well as clinical trials to be conducted with objective outcomes.
