What is it about?

More high powered weapons are being used by civilians to injure other civilians. The literature traditionally stated that broken bones resulting from gunshots had low complication rates of soft tissue and bone infections, as well as how long the bone took to heal. The literature however needs to account for these high powered weapons being increasingly used since the complication rates have proven to be higher than previously thought. The recent data suggests that a more aggressive surgical approach needs to be undertaken to manage these injuries re: intravenous antibiotics, washing out of wounds in the operating theatre, early internal bony stabilization.

Why is it important?

To increase awareness of the increased complications being seen from gunshot injuries and to provide a modern insight as to how to manage them

Perspectives

Randomized controlled multicentered trials need to be available in the future to give improved guidance
