What is it about?

This is the second part of a work which was previously published and shows how processing and composition affects the microstructure of U - Nb - Zr alloys (with 88 weight % U).

Why is it important?

Uranium alloys are good candidates for novel nuclear fuels in the accident-tolerant concept, in which a severe accident would lead to more safe conditions for the environment. Uranium alloys also allow to reach criticality (i.e., the condition to result in sustainable nuclear chain reaction) with less enrichment, which is good to avoid the production of Plutonium (which can be used for weapon production) by ill-intended persons or governments. Less enrichment means also that the fuel will be cheaper.

Perspectives

This is the second part of the extensive research Dr. Morais made in his PhD, there is also a third part, which is being preparated now.
