What is it about?

Here we deal with the first part of an investigation to determine the best alloy and the best processing schedule to produce nuclear fuels based on alloys of uranium. Here we investigated how processing, in particular heat treatment and mechanical forming , affect the properties of alloys of uranium with 6 weight % in zirconium and 6 weight % niobium.

Why is it important?

Nuclear energy is one of the sources of energy available to mankind use. A large part of the world's electricity production comes from nuclear reactors, but the nuclear technology is not only limited to energy production, nuclear medicine, in particular the production of radio isotopes for medicine use, as well as testing and processing of materials, often require a nuclear reactor. Unfortunately accidents in reactors are severe and there is the need to develop more secure technologies. The use of metallic uranium alloys is one of these technologies, allowing to use less enriched materials with the same efficiency.

Perspectives

It is satisfying to see the good work performed by a student. Dr Morais has done an important job in this work.
