What is it about?

It is about the possibility that leptospirosis can be more common that it is usually considered under specific circumstances in big cities in developed countries although major problems are always related to developing countries and poverty. Global warming increase the survival of pathogenic Leptospira and their diffusion in rodents or stray animals in the towns.

Why is it important?

Leptospirosis is highly related to poverty and tropical weather so it is mainly a huge problem for public health in developing countries where numerous people can severely be affected during outbreaks. However in this paper a high prevalence is reported in a city in South Italy where climate conditions can favour the trasmission of pathogenic leptospira to humans. However it is pointed out how in developed countries, a good quality of life and wellness probably result in mild and underdiagnosed leptospirosis but it can be crucial to consider it in elders or imunocomprimised individuals.

Perspectives

I think this publication as others referred to leptospirosis in big cities of developed countries provide useful information to assess the infection in the target population (elderly and immune compromised patients) that is growing in developed countries where the average life expectancy is constantly growing
