What is it about?
Current observer schemes for non-infinitely observable descriptor systems require stringent mathematical conditions to work. The use of two sliding mode observers in cascade (versus a single observer) relaxes these conditions, allowing the scheme to be applicable to more systems. This paper details the estimation of states and faults affecting a non-infinitely observable descriptor system, and the estimates converge on the actual values in finite time.

Why is it important?
The application of observer schemes are limited by the mathematical conditions required for their feasibility. This work greatly expands the applicability of observer schemes, particularly for non-infinitely observable descriptor systems.
