What is it about?
Bioactive glasses are able to bond to bone through formation of hydroxyapatite in body fluids. However, because of their poor strength, use is restricted to non-load-bearing applications. Addition of nitrogen increases properties of silicate glasses. In this paper it is shown that N increases hardness, elastic modulus and gracture resistance as a result of extra crosslinking in the glass structure. Initial assessment of bioactivity suggests that varying the N content may allow tailoring of different levels of bioactivity.
