What is it about?

Anti-oxidation agent is one technique to enhance the strength and stiffness as well as the life span while the fire retardant additives employed in order to improve the fire safety level of the resulting biocomposites. Therefore, the objective of this study is to investigate the effect of antioxidants and fire retardants as mineral fillers on the physical and mechanical properties of high loading hybrid biocomposites reinforced with rice husk and saw dust. It was found that the application of antioxidants and fire retardants had a positive effect on the performance of biocomposites.

Why is it important?

The induction time, durability or the lifetime of biocomposites is dependent on the antioxidants and their amounts. In order to provide stability during processing and preservation during long-term service, composite materials generally require more antioxidants compared to neat plastic. On the other hand, safety issues always demand flame resistant materials especially for building construction and consumer products. There are many flame retardant chemicals that proven to be effective in suppressing the flame behaviour of the biocomposites but most of them are found harmful to the environment.

Perspectives

This article aim to improvise particularly on flame resistant and ageing characteristics of biocomposites so that it can inspire more research towards the innovation of biocomposites.
