What is it about?

The article analyses how manufacturing firms strategically organise their global supply chains. Using data from an international survey, we identify 4 configurations of supply chain according to the extent of globalization of sourcing, manufacturing and distribution. Next, we show how different configurations are associated to different best practices to reach superior performance.

According to the configuration of its supply chain, a company should invest in different supply chain management practices among supply and distribution strategy, supply risk management, supplier and customer integration.

Perspectives

The article provides an original view about how companies can organise successfully their global supply chain. Moreover, a clear difference emerges between companies with domestic vs global manufacturing.
