What is it about?

The antifungal drug fluconazole is commonly dispensed for the treatment of localised and disseminated Candida infections. However, microorganisms targeted by this drug have in many instances developed drug resistance, rendering it ineffective. In this study a plant extract used in traditional medicine was tested in conjunction with fluconazole against two pathogenic yeast species.

Why is it important?

Safe, cost-effective and locally available therapeutic alternatives are needed for the treatment of infections caused by drug-resistant microorganisms.

Perspectives

The treatment of drug-resistant yeast infections could potentially be improved with the therapeutic use of this indigenous plant extract.
