What is it about?

3D printing is important because it allows people to create complex objects quickly and affordably. In the construction sector, 3D printing (3DP) is a potential technology of the future. This paper examines the production of building blocks, by 3DP, with different internal geometries to reduce heat transfer between block surfaces. Also, nature-inspired geometries were considered.

Why is it important?

3D printing is a technology that has the potential to bridge the gap between traditional construction methods and customized solutions. In particular, our study underscores the capabilities of 3D printing in creating blocks with intricate geometries, opening avenues for further exploration in thermal optimization and the design of structures capable of mitigating heat flux.

Perspectives

In this work, we show that, by changing the internal geometry of building blocks, the heat flux can be reduced. This opens the possibility of investigating more intricated structures, also inspired by nature as the bees' honeycomb, to further enhance the energy efficiency of buildings.
