What is it about?

All polymer based anion-exchangers have a certain hydrophobic properties and can operate as mixed-mode stationary phase in HPLC of ionogenic substances. A new criterium to measure hydrophobicity/ion-exchange ratio is proposed. The hydrophobicity of more than 37 anion-exchangers is evaluated. For the first time, zwitterion exchange properties of Type II (dialkylalkanolammonium type) are discussed.

Why is it important?

The hydrophobicity of ion-exchangers has been ignored in ion-chromatography of polar compounds for many year, but its contibution to the retention of separation selectivity is crucial in ion chromatography of various charged molecules.

Perspectives

This works opens a new possibilities of using ion-exchangers in HPLC (not only IC) and replace polar embedded stationary phases in many application.
