What is it about?

Typically as countries get richer they tend to change the energy mix. We address if being a democracy or not helps in changing that energy mix for constant levels of income. And the answer is yes, they do.

Why is it important?

This is important because it is one of the first assessments of the fact that a country is a democracy or share more democratic features also helps it to be more environmental friendly in what is related to energy production. This contributes to understand if being more democratic improves climate change mitigation. Specifically: - With development, less democratic countries depart faster from the hydro source. - With development, less democratic countries rely more on oil and gas. - With development, more democratic societies have more variety at the upper rungs of energy mix. - Specific econometric methods for multiple share are employed, also robust to endogeneity.

Perspectives

It was a great pleasure to work in a scientific publication for the first time with my colleague and friend Esmeralda Ramalho, an outstanding econometrician. Also, this paper was important for me as another step on the scientific interest on climate change and development related issues, which I began earlier with the publications on Ecological Economics and Structural Change and Economic Dynamics.
