What is it about?

'Candidatus Magnetoglobus multicellularis' is a spherical ensemble of prokaryotic cells which are able to align to magnetic fields while swimming propelled by flagella. Here we show that these microorganisms grow by splitting into two new spherical individuals through a series of structural changes: (i) the cells grow and (ii) divide in the spherical microorganism; then (iii) it elongates to an ellipsoidal and then to an (iv) eight-shape; then (v) it splits into two new spherical individuals.

Why is it important?

This work explains how the magnetic axis is maintained through generations of magnetotactic multicellular microorganisms. In addition, it describes one in a series of prokaryotic microorganisms which represent attempts to develop a multicellular life style.

Perspectives

This work was used as basis for theorethical work on evolution of multicellular organisms.
