What is it about?
As in vertebrates, a compositional compartimentalization is found in maize, however, it is much simpler. Compartments are 5-6 in vertebrates, while they are 3 in maize. Basically, practically all genes are concentrated in one isochore as this notion is defined in vertebrates (4% GC). This organization is such despite a similar heterogeneity in the 3rd position of codons, which shows that the compositional constraints on plant genomes are very different than those on vertebrate genomes.

Why is it important?
The general description of genome structures regarding their commom features and peculiarities is important to understand how they may adapt to selective pressures. This report is part of essential biological observations in comparative genomics of higher eukaryotes.
