What is it about?

This paper looks at the SDGs from the mining community perspective. It builds on the authors' previous work on mapping all mining communities in South Africa, and now measures 12 socio-economic indicators for over 100 communities - cities, towns and villages across the country.

Why is it important?

It highlights the scale of the challenge faced by the country to achieve the SDGs, and that mining communities cannot be treated as a homogenous group. There is extreme inequality across a range of measures of basic services, living standards, public goods and livelihoods.

Perspectives

We need to rethink how the mining industry is approaching the SDGs. We have to go beyond corporate reporting and involved statistical agencies, civil society and government.
