What is it about?

It is critical for grounding electrodes to provide a low-impedance path for the excess current going into the ground, so the transient voltage increase would be low and acceptable. In this article, using a novel frequency-domain simulation model, the impedance of the grounding electrodes is calculated in the frequency domain considering different soil models with different water content values. Then, time-domain results are presented to show the effect of different variables in the performance of the grounding system.

Why is it important?

The frequency-dependency of soil electrical parameters, expressed in several different models available in the literature, had been shown to have a considerable effect on the performance of grounding systems. In none of these models or the previous works that used these models, the effect of varying soil water content (hence the soil conductivity and permittivity) have been taken into account. This work shows that this parameter can significantly change the characteristics and effectivity of the grounding systems.

Perspectives

The original contribution of this article is questioning the assumption of a constant soil electrical permittivity/water content in the previous works. The mostly used models of soil electrical parameters as a function of frequency were considered in this paper to make a general accurate conclusion.
