What is it about?
In this study, the number of new cases of chronic bronchitis diagnosed between 1991 and 2001 in two volcanic areas were compared. In the area with active manifestation of volcanism, the likelihood of having chronic bronchitis was higher than in the area volcanically inactive.

Why is it important?
Although the presence of other risk factors was not accounted for, these findings should be enough to increase clinicians' awareness to the risk of chronic bronchitis among people who live in volcanically active places and help in providing advice on how to ease their symptoms.
