What is it about?

This special issue (VSI) contains selected papers presented at the 22nd European Conference on Fracture (ECF 22) – Loading and Environment Effects on Structural Integrity, held in Belgrade, Serbia, August 26-31, 2018 within the ECF22 Special Symposium: “Recent Advances on Hydrogen Embrittlement Understanding and Future Research Framework” (HE Special Symposium), with a round table and panel discussions, organized by Milos Djukic, William Curtin and Zhiliang Zhang.

Why is it important?

The special issue presents 19 selected articles, including 3 invited critical review articles. Hydrogen embrittlement continues to be a critical degradation mode of structural metals and is becoming increasingly important as society works toward a hydrogen economy as part of the solution to sustainability and climate change. We further hope that this collection of papers can spark new research by enabling the community to see commonalities or gaps in the current understanding and thereby accelerate progress toward technological solutions to the hydrogen embrittlement problem.

Perspectives

It is our hope that this collection of 19 articles serves as a benchmark for the state of the field at the present time, representing a range of different concepts current in the global marketplace of ideas as related to hydrogen embrittlement.
