What is it about?
This paper examines the relationship between energy consumption and economic growth in Chinese provinces using nonparametric analysis. The study finds a nonlinear relationship and smooth structural changes in most provinces. The analysis reveals convergence in energy consumption and economic growth patterns across provinces. Additionally, the study finds economic growth to have a positive effect, on average, on energy consumption in all provinces, except for Beijing. Further, the energy-environmental Kuznets curve exists between economic growth and energy consumption in 20 out of 30 Chinese provinces. The findings have important implications for improving energy efficiency, decoupling economic growth from energy consumption, and reducing the environmental impact of rapid economic growth.

Why is it important?
This research is significant because it provides insights into the complex relationship between energy consumption and economic growth in Chinese provinces. The use of nonparametric analysis allows for a more flexible and accurate understanding of this relationship. The findings highlight the presence of nonlinear dynamics and structural changes, which can inform policymakers and practitioners in developing strategies for sustainable development. The study also contributes to the existing literature by examining the energy-environmental Kuznets curve in a regional context. The study highlights that to reduce energy intensity and pollution emissions as the goal of environmental policy, including efforts to improve the efficiency and demand side of the control policy, in a short period of time is bound to have some negative impact on China's economic activity, but in the long run, the negative effect will be weakened, and the energy conservation and emissions reduction policy can be implemented for a long time, so as to ultimately achieve coordinated development of energy conservation and economic growth.
